Nelson received formal woodturning instruction at Campbell Folk School of the Arts in the Great Smoky Mountains. His medium is found fallen timber from the neighbor's wood-pile or elsewhere. Beautiful hidden qualities of the wood are revealed when turned on his lathe. He enjoys creating smooth flowing forms highlighting these features.

His sculpted wood art has been shown at a number of museums and galleries including the MacLachlan Woodworking Museum, Gallery 121, John Parrott and Quinte Arts Council Galleries, and Kingston School of Art. One of his pieces titled "Eye of Isis" was awarded "Best of Category" at the 2012 Made of Wood Show, and Bartlett Gallery.
